About the event
This guided tour will tell the stories of the Pickerings and other early settlers who cleared the valley floor so they could grow crops, raise animals, and raise their families. Along the way we will visit some spectacular specimans in the City's Heritage Tree Program. We will discuss the landscape as it was when the first Euro/American migrants arrived, how the early settlers modified the landscape, and what has been done since and the long-term consequences of all this change.
The walk will be an out-and-back tour starting at Pickering Barn and traveling north into Lake Sammamish State Park and returning the same way. The route will be on fairly level ground with travel on paved and unpaved surfaces including wood chips and grass. Close-toed shoes are highly recommended. The pace will be easy and allow for plenty of storytelling and conversation.
Done in collaboration with the City of Issaquah, the tours will blend the stories of people and the landscape that shaped our town.
